Styling in the contemporary executive office

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Modern executive furniture seems to fall into two categories. It seems people are either looking for prestige or function. Most people involved in the information technology field tend to invest in executive furniture based upon its function. Although if there is a particular style preferred by the high tech exec, it is flowing with plenty of curves and a definitive “Jetsons” feel.

Obviously the executive furniture used for a massive law firm will continue to be purchased based upon its rich look that implies solidity and trust. Hence, attorneys will not be abandoning mahogany and walnut furniture anytime soon. This same premise also applies to executive chairs, as black and brown leather office chairs continue to be popular with the old money set and we baby boomers involved in anything related to technology marketing are always looking for the most comfort of an ergonomic chair. Another interesting comparison of the preference for those involved in information technology as opposed to those in somewhat antique professions is the use of cabinetry. Those in younger thinking want a printer stand that rolls and requires a very small footprint, whereas the contrast for legal offices is a preference to hide machinery and supplies.

Shipping is the first point to examine when searching online for furniture

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

When attempting to find quality office furniture online there is one consideration that must actually be looked into first. Even before you choose colors and shapes, you need to look into shipping. It doesn’t do you any good to find a great deal on a mahogany veneer executive office desk if after calculating shipping from the seller in one part of the country you find out that the cost of getting the peace delivered is more than the cost of purchase.

Any time you can find a supplier online who is within 300 miles of your location, your purchase of a large item such as an office desk is far more feasible. Perhaps this is why in countries such as the United Kingdom, sales of large items such as office desks and even bathroom fixtures are easily purchased at and deliver from online stores. Almost every quality seller of office furniture online has factored a means for efficient and inexpensive shipping into their business plan. In fact, one could go as far to say that if a seller cannot tell you exactly how much shipping will cost and exactly how long delivery will take, you should positively take your business elsewhere.

The rapidly evolving shape of office chairs

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Have you recently noticed that when it comes to office furniture chairs have changed drastically? No longer do we see the simple oak hard bottom swivel chair as a mainstay for worker seating. What one is more likely to see at a WorkStation is a high backed mesh office chair with adjustable arm rests and a hydraulic height adjustment. Today’s office chair has been designed so that a worker can remain seated comfortably for 3 to 4 hours at a stretch. This is extremely important because so many workers, such as those in full support are tied to their station by an endless stream of phone and ticket requests.

Of course now that office landscape is the mainstream planning technique used in businesses such as those offering support, operator chairs must be sturdy and still compact. In the world of office furniture chairs must have adjustable height, lumbar support, and cushioning set at specific levels of firmness. To purchase a quality heavy duty office chair that meets all of these qualifications one should expect to pay from one to two hundred dollars.

Don’t settle for furniture that isn’t computer ready in your office

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

My wife has a very nice piece of furniture is expressly built for her computer and printer. It has a superstructure that allows for books to be placed in shell fashion underneath and for the printer to sit up on top. This piece was originally built around 10 years ago and as such is designed with enough depth to and it allows use of an old cathode ray type of computer monitor. Now that we have purchased a nice desktop computer with a slim line monitor, this piece of office computer furniture is even more helpful as more desk space is free for taking notes.

My point is that in order for a piece of office furniture to be effective and useful in today’s work environment it really needs to have been built with computer technology in mind. To begin with, older desks are not built to accommodate the many tables required for computing. The modern computer desk should have rounded corners for safety, no file doors to get in the way. It should easily accommodate connection to printers, routers and LAN cables. Before you go out and buy just another rectangular office desk, take a look at modern round cornered desk designs that are built to let you work for longer periods of time at your computer.

Finding a balance of style and sturdiness for shelving your books

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

When purchasing office bookcases, the primary consideration should always be whether or not the furniture you find can support the weight you plan to place it on its shelves. One of the reasons that lawyer’s stack bookcases remain so popular through the years is that their design and construction which essentially builds a level upon a level allowing for double for strength so to speak permits one to place extremely heavy books on each shelf.

In the case of the legal profession these books are generally thick volumes of statutes and case law. Beyond that profession, for the most part, office bookcases are primarily used ornamentally. To that end, most sellers of office furniture stock bookcases for the office that generically blend with all of the many types of desks and chairs now being sold. Obviously a glass and steel bookcase filled with a few books and an assortment of knick knacks can find its place among the executive office suites large rectangular mahogany desk. They should also bear in mind that one of the major purposes of a bookcase is not so much to hold the books we read as to display the books we have read, or perhaps even to show off books we would like people to think we have read. In either situation, bookcases for the home or office continue to be a popular design element.

The executive desk as recreated by the information technology era

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

One supposes that the first executive desks were the famous and historical Bureaus de Platte built from the time of Louis the 15th. And amazingly those same Louis the 15th style desks are still somewhat popular in feminine offices and offices of businesses where an almost gaudy presence is expected. Executive desks certainly run the full gamut of style ranges from staunch and stodgy to clean and high tech. The traditional rectangular walnut or mahogany desk for the executive suite is still immensely popular and seems to be the preferred barrier between management and those on receiving side of orders.

Of particular note is that these desks for everyone from CEOs to the sole proprietor of a home business have all been altered in design of late to accommodate the age of information technology. No executive artifice is immune to pre drilled holes that allow desktop computers and other telemetry their preeminent place in the office. Add to the traditional design elements desks for executives made from glass, Lucite and even carbon fiber to fully incorporate newer than space age design ideas. As fancy elements have been removed from the executive suite and boardroom, prices for high end management required furniture have plummeted, making these huge size desks and credenzas far more affordable.

The hidden ergonomic improvements of modern office furniture

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

When the initial concept of ergonomic office furniture was developed in the late 1960s and early 70s it was met with immense skepticism as users were expected to load themselves onto this quirky looking chair design that require them to balance precariously without the assistance of a chair back and their legs tucked beneath them. As the seventies moved onward ergonomic office furniture continued to be scoffed that and was pushed to the back of sales and innovation efforts. Enter the nineties where baby boomers begin to feel a bit of age and searches for any type of a work environment aid that allows reduction of muscle and back fatigue are constant. Just as we required our automobile seats to have a Recaro design that allows for lumbar support, we now needed soft comfortable chairs that accommodated our lesser strength and greater girth.

Enter the new generation of office furniture. Although these chairs and desks show no markedly visible design changes, they are inherently equipped to support our older lower backs with cleverly designed lumbar and armrest elements. Even unsuspected items such as the common office desk have been recreated to allow for proper line of sight to computer monitors and exact distance to computer keyboards.

Searching for discounts in business furnishings

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

When shopping for office supplies, whether it is a box of paper clips or 100 desks and chairs for a new help center support unit, we are always looking for the lowest price. And if purchasing those paper clips for a corporate entity stretching around the world using billions of clips per month, a slight variance in price can equal humongous savings. In contrast, even when purchasing one suite of office furniture, if savings are of a sufficient percentage we are very likely to save a great deal of money. When purchasing office furniture, the best way to buy cheap so to speak is to purchase direct from the manufacturer’s agent online. One cannot truly expect to locate discount office furniture if that furniture has been transported across the nation from manufacturer to distributor and set into a glitzy showroom where a commissioned sales person awaits as a tiger set to pounce.

Discount office furniture purchased online will routinely save the buyer 30 to 40% against retail. Remember, as the end user consumer, you are always expected to pay the freight. All of that transport and warehousing is passed on to you along with a salesman’s salary. It should also be pointed out that purchasing office furniture on the Internet allows you a far greater selection as you may choose from not just the range of one store but the entire inventory available in an endless list of website based shops.

Designer flair added to the workplace

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Just as we have seen the creation of designer clothing, eye glasses and home furniture, we are now seeing a proliferation of beautiful and functional designer office furniture. While in the past designer office furniture referred only to special limited edition products by fifties modern designers such as Charles Eames, today the term has come to refer to the office desks and chairs created by all of our favorite general design houses such as Chanel or Calvin Klein.

This is not to say that those famous designers are personally sketching the chair or desk that bears their name. Rather they are allowing their general styles to be incorporated into these pieces of furniture so that fans of their designs can share a bit of that in their office environment. Consider this to be more like hanging pictures of people you admire on your office walls. Also consider that products made and emblazoned with these designer labels are almost always built to a very high standard so that you are assured of buying a quality piece of office furniture.

Reinventing the contemporary office environment

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

There was a time when contemporary office furniture referred exclusively to works by such noted designers as Charles Eames or the Bauhaus school.  Today, while the Eames chairs still are a much sought after status symbol for the executive office contemporary office furniture has come to mean much more, as it defines specific functions in the workplace.  To begin with, you may notice that modern workstations are built using office desks with rounded corners.  We tend to travel more in the workplace.

Even though paper is becoming an unreality and files are sent across the room and around the world electronically, office workers tend to be far more mobile and move about so as to exchange ideas free from the alienation created by visiting the world through a computer monitor.  Office chairs have taken a turn towards modern as ergonomic design meshes perfectly with late 20th century and new millennium construction.  Of course modern design is only new for its fifteen minutes of fame. Beyond that, there rests function as contemporary office furniture changes primarily to meet the demands of the digital world.  One wonders what office desks and chairs will look like following the next advance in information technology.
